A Deepening Global Crisis: Reporters Without Borders said its latest assessment shows that freedom of the press has reached its lowest level in 25 years. The organization reported that more than half of the world’s countries are now classified in the “difficult” or “very serious” categories, reflecting a sharp deterioration in the environment for independent journalism.

Journalists Facing Rising Dangers: The group warned that reporters are increasingly working under conditions marked by intimidation, censorship, surveillance, arrests and violence. In many countries, independent media outlets face political and financial pressure, while journalists covering conflicts, corruption and human rights abuses remain especially vulnerable.

Gaza Toll Highlights Deadly Risks: Reporters Without Borders also drew attention to the heavy toll on journalists in Gaza, saying more than 220 journalists have been killed there since October 2023. The organization described the situation as one of the most dangerous periods for media workers in recent history, underscoring the deadly consequences of reporting from conflict zones.

Concerns Over Democracy and Accountability: Press freedom advocates say the decline has serious implications for public accountability and democratic life. When journalists are silenced or restricted, citizens lose access to reliable information, while abuses of power become harder to expose. Rights groups are urging governments to protect media workers, end impunity for crimes against journalists and defend the public’s right to know.
